Another vantage point
The monument represents the different people and skills that were involved in this construction project. The United States depends on the trans-Alaska pipeline to deliver more than 20% of its domestic oil production. (This was in 1993)

The pipeline carries oil from Prudhoe Bay and other reservoirs on the North Slope, over 800 miles of rugged Alaskan mountains , rivers, and harsh terrain to Valdez - the northernmost ice-free port in North America.

The total workforce from 1969 thru 1977 is stated as being 70,000 during construction, with more than 1,300 current employees required for continued operation.

The dedication placque
In case you can't read the words:

"We didn't know it couldn't be done"

Dedicated to the thousands of men and women who built the Trans Alaska Pipeline (1969-1977)

The Alyeska Pipeline Marine Terminal
Alaska crude makes its long journey south from the North Slope more than 800 miles to Valdez by way of an American engineering marvel, the trans-Alaska pipeline. Moving at rates of up to 88,000 barrels per hour, the incoming oil flow is metered and sent to the storage tanks or directly to the tankers.

The pipe itself is 48 inches in diameter and made of high-tensile strength carbon steel, and a wall thickness of.462 or .562 inches. "Pigs" are forced thru the pipe with the oil for the purpose of cleaning the interior pipe walls, surveying the pipe shape, and corrosion detection.

Another angle
Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, founded in 1970. "Alyeska" and "Alaska" are two of several spellings of the original Aleut root word meaning "the mainland." Literally, according to one account, it means "where the sea breaks its back" - a reference to the Alaska Peninsula from the perspective of the people of the Aleutian Chain

Some interesting facts about the terminal:

Cost to build: $1.4 billon
Area: 1,000 acres
Employees: Approx 200 (does not include contractor personnel)
Oil storage capacity: 9.18 million barrels
